“You Can’t Have Your Cake and Eat It Too” Press Release

Kreëmart, Luciana Brito, and Pérez Art Museum Miami to present You Can’t Have Your Cake and Eat It Too, a large-scale, edible sculptural installation and performance by Leandro Erlich during Art Basel Miami Beach 2022

The performance will take place at Luciana Brito Galeria’s Booth D24 at Art Basel Miami Beach on Tuesday, November 29, at 6:00 pm, and at PAMM on Wednesday, November 30, at 2:30 pm. The project celebrates Erlich’s first survey exhibition in North America, Leandro Erlich: Liminal, on view at PAMM from November 29, 2022 to September 4, 2023.

Miami Beach, FL, Creative multi-hyphenate Raphael Castoriano of Kreëmart, acclaimed Brazilian gallerist Luciana Brito, and Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) will present You Can’t Have Your Cake and Eat It Too by Argentine conceptual artist Leandro Erlich. Comprising a large-scale sculptural installation and performance, the project explores the artist’s ongoing interest in disrupting an understood reality between artwork and audience. You Can’t Have Your Cake and Eat It Too will be shown twice, with special performances on November 29 and November 30, 2022 at Art Basel Miami Beach and PAMM, respectively, on the occasion of the opening of the retrospective exhibition Leandro Erlich: Liminal at PAMM.

Erlich’s work explores the artifices of visuality, through sensory and perceptual games. Everyday architecture is a recurrent theme in his work, with which he creates paradoxes between what we believe and what we see, with situations of mystery and questioning. This transgression of limits destabilizes not only our absolute beliefs, but also the limits of art and the legitimizing institutions. Through installations, sculptures, photographs, and videos, the artist simulates situations that dislocate our everyday experience and our understanding of the common.

On display during You Can’t Have Your Cake and Eat It Too will be one-to-one replicas of an ottoman and a daybed, from the famed Barcelona collection by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, made entirely of cake. The cakes are created to look identical to real furniture. The works will be on display in a gallery setting, before they are cut into and shared with audience members, revealing the true nature of the unassuming item. With these art objects, Erlich plays with the viewer’s sense of perception and introduces doubt about our own sensorial input. The two artworks will be available for sale as an edition of 3 + 1 AP at Luciana Brito Galeria at Art Basel Miami Beach.

The first of Erlich’s performances will be held at Luciana Brito Galeria’s Booth D24 at Art Basel Miami Beach on Tuesday, November 29. The Barcelona ottoman will be on display from 11:00 am onwards, with a cake-cutting at 6:00 pm.

The second iteration of the performance will be held on Wednesday, November 30, at PAMM, in celebration of the opening of Leandro Erlich: Liminal, the first monographic survey exhibition of the artist’s work in North America. On view in PAMM’s special exhibition galleries from November 29, 2022 to September 4, 2023, the exhibition presents sixteen works spanning more than two decades of Erlich’s production, selected and arranged by New York-based guest curator Dan Cameron. The Barcelona daybed will serve as the centerpiece for the November 30 performance, in which an actor portraying a psychiatrist is haunted and teased by the presence of his fantasy woman. The performance will begin at 11:00 am with a cake-cutting at 2:30 pm.

You Can’t Have Your Cake and Eat It Too marks a revival of Erlich’s first collaboration with Kreëmart for the American Patrons of the Tate at the Haunch of Venison in 2009. Documentation of the original performance will be featured in the artist’s upcoming book, Liminal, set to be published by RM/Toluca Éditions in spring 2023.

You Can’t Have Your Cake and Eat It Too is sponsored by Raphael Castoriano’s Kreëmart, Luciana Brito Galeria, and Leandro Erlich. Cake by Dessiree Salaverria of the Netflix show “Is It Cake?”

About Leandro Erlich
Leandro Erlich was born in Argentina in 1973. He lives and works between Paris, Buenos Aires, and Montevideo. Over the past two decades, his work has been shown internationally and featured in the permanent collections of major museums and private collectors. His most recent exhibitions at the MORI Art Museum (Tokyo, 2017), MALBA (Buenos Aires, 2019), CAFAM (Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing, 2019), and CCBB (Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, 2021-2022) broke all admission records.

He went on to study at the Core Program, an artist residency in Houston, Texas (Glassell School of Art, 1998). In 2001 he became Argentina’s representative at the 49th Venice Biennale with Swimming Pool, a landmark piece that is part of the permanent collection at the 21st Century Museum of Art of Kanazawa (Japan) and the Voorlinden Museum (Netherlands).

As a conceptual artist, his work explores the perceptual bases of reality and our capacity to interrogate these same foundations through a visual framework. The architecture of the everyday is a recurring theme in Erlich’s art, aimed at creating a dialogue between what we believe and what we see, just as he seeks to close the distance between the museum or gallery space and daily experience.

About Luciana Brito Galeria
Since its inauguration in 1997, Luciana Brito Galeria has been dedicated to the professionalization and strengthening of the art market in Brazil. Recognized as one of the most important galleries for the exchange of Brazilian art research abroad and the consolidation of foreign artists in Brazil, it is also a pioneer in the projection of Brazilian art at international fairs.

At its outset, the gallery’s roster already included important Brazilian artists, such as Ana Maria Tavares, Nelson Leirner, and Regina Silveira. At the end of the 1990s and early 2000s, the gallery was already well established, also representing Rochelle Costi along with the estates of two artists who played key roles in Brazilian art history: Geraldo de Barros and Waldemar Cordeiro. From then on, the gallery entered a phase of internationalization, promoting the work of Brazilian artists on the international scene, while raising awareness in Brazil about the research of international artists. Luciana Brito Galeria went on to also represent Leandro Erlich, Liliana Porter, Marina Abramović, Allan McCollum, Alex Katz, and Anthony McCall, more recently assuming the representation of the estates of Gaspar Gasparian, Thomaz Farkas, and Fernando Zarif. In parallel with its work with artists of already established importance, the gallery has always kept abreast of the most recent investigations in contemporary art and is currently working to boost the careers of young artists, such as Rafael Carneiro, Héctor Zamora, Tobias Putrih, Paula Garcia, and Pablo Lobato.

In 2015, the gallery took an important step when it moved from its traditional space in São Paulo’s Vila Olímpia District to occupy an icon of modernist architecture on Av. Nove de Julho – the former residence of Castor Delgado Perez, an official cultural heritage site designed by architect Rino Levi.
